Before we start, you need to know some rules on describing yourself to an employer. Rule number 1, don’t talk about your personal life. When someone asks you to describe yourself, they’re not talking about your personal life. They’re asking you to tell them about your qualifications, experience, and how you fit into the company. Basically, they just want to know your background and experience. Rule number 2, tell a story. Your story should be a professional one that’s appealing, clear and complete. Now, that we’ve covered the rules, let’s talk about the four techniques on how to describe yourself during an interview.

Brief Introduction of Your Work History

Technique number 1, is to give a brief introduction on your work history. So basically you have to describe what company you work for, what position you were in, how long you were in that position, and what were your responsibilities in that position.

Tell Them About Your Achievements

Technique number 2, direct your brief story to an achievement. Before you tell the employer about your responsibilities at the company, tell them about your achievements at the company. Talk about achievements that stand out to you.

Let The Employer Know That You Understand The Demand For The Position

Technique number 3, tell the employer about the knowledge you have to have for this position. When you finish your story, it’s time to let the employer know that you understand the demand for the position they’re hiring for. For example, you would say, “I understand that the financial consultant you’re looking for has to have the ability to understand the market in a timely manner”. This is important because it shows the employer that you’re not just focus on your abilities and achievements, you also understand the need for your position.

Explain To The Employer How You Can Help Them Succeed

Technique number 4, tell the employer why they should hire you. Explain to the employer how you’re unique, and how you can help them succeed. For example, you can say, “Due to my abilities to improve efficiency, I believe that I can maximize this position”.
